With 487 individual MacTighernans identified, this is an attempt to map the MacTighrnan families and their relationship to each other if any exist.  The below MacTighernan map shows the Genetic DNA mapping of 137 individual MacTighernans who took the DNA test that fall into 20 different, separate, distinct and unrelated DNA groups from 13 different countries. The 2nd map is a Geographic origin map with each of the 137 MacTighernans positioned by longitude and latitude on their family's original townland in a small area of Connacht if known. Below is the geographic map of each MacTighernan townland of origin if known. With 487 MacTighernans identified worldwide, 137 have taken the DNA test, 89 of the 137 know the name of their townland of origin in Ireland and 109 of the 137 know their county of origin in Ireland. Also shown are the five that only know their parish.

Note: The below satellite image is a jpg file so it is what you see with no ability to click down for more information on the MacTighernan in each of the balloons.  If you run the free version of Google Earth on your computer let me know and I will email you the Google Earth file which will enable you to click on each of the balloons and see which MacTighernan it is along with their other information such as DNA Group, townland, civil parish, county and country of immigration if the family left Ireland. The 4 white pins are for the four historically extent MacTighernans of Rockfield, Co Leitrim, Tullyhunco, Co Cavan, the MacTighernans of Co Fermanagh and Mulmurry MacTernan of Lisnanorrus, Co Leitrim.  See legend below for 20 distinct DNA Groups of MacTighernans from 13 countries.  Due to the Google Earth difficulty assigning different colored balloons with numbers only the T3 Group has balloons, e.g. with number of mutations showing.

= unknown townland, parish only
= T Group, including the baseline and those with mutations off the baseline
[dark blue] = Ta Group baseline: [light blue] = Tb Group baseline: [purple] = the Td Group baseline
= T3 Group baseline: a or = mutations off the T3 Group baseline: the letter inside = the T3a, T3b, T3c, T3d or T3e Group baseline
= T2 Group, including the baseline and those with mutations off the baseline, T2a Group is a yellow balloon with star inside

On the satellite image below are the known original townlands of MacTighernans spread over a 450 square mile area.  Due to the density, what looks like one balloon may actually be 2 or 3 balloons one behind the other as some MacTighernan families originate from the same townland or their townlands border each other. The displayed balloons below include the 5 MacTighernans that only know their parish. MacTighernan is used to cover all the variants of our surname.  Lough Allen is right in the middle of Co Leitrim in the below image.  The yellow line is the border with Northern Ireland.
