The Extended 10 Generation Family line of the McTernan / McTiernan's from Sheskin as of 2002. While the known origins of our family are in Ireland under British rule, the known decendents of the family are citizens of Ireland, England, Australia and the United States.
My McTernans are from the Townland of Sheskin , Catholic parish of Killargue , Civil parish of Killarga, Barony of Drumahiare, Poor Law Union of Manorhamilton, West Breifne, Co Leitrim, Connaught, Ireland. The Carney line originates from the Townland of Carrigeencor , civil and Catholic parish of Drumlease, Barony of Drumahaire, Co Leitrim.
Below are the 10 generations of the McTiernan descendents. The many Hugh's from Sheskin are numbered with Roman numerals to keep them stright. There is an average of 28.9 years between generations. Hugh O'Rourke and Catherine McTernan are listed in the structure as they have the oldest gravestone in the Abbey of Creevelea dated 8-22-1721. Hugh McTernan VIII told me in 1997 that along with our McTernan grave, the one with Hugh O'Rourke and Catherine McTernan are also part of our family. No documentation has been found as yet to substansiate that, hence the dotted lines.
One very informative book on the O'Rourkes is "Documents and Materials for the history of the O'Rourke family" by Bishop Count Edward O'Rourke, 1876--, the Danzig bishop went to Drumahaire in the 1920s to uncover his roots and wrote the book. The Bishop, a descendent of the Wild Geese spoke six languages.
Written in several very old Irish historical books is the statement that the McTernans of Tullyhunco, Co Cavan are descendent from Teghernan O'Rourke. Any link from the McTernans of Tullyhunco to the Sheskin McTernans is as yet unknown. West Breifne is composed of all of Co Leitrim and the two baronies of Tullyhaw and Tullyhunco in Co Cavan. The O'Rourkes were kings of West Breifne until the early 1600s. Irish history also states that a branch of the McTernans descend from the family of The O'Conor Don who for a long time was the king of Ireland living in north Roscommon. There are currently about 30 MacTighernans in seven countries and five continents doing the DNA test. So far 17 of the families originate from Co Leitrim. This DNA test may in the long term be able to prove or not if one of the eight DNA groups genetically match The O'Conor Don. It has already proved that none of the 8 groups match The O'Rourke. To see how well the DNA testors match go to http://mctiernan.com/dnatest.htm
The McTernan sept from Mount Allen, Mountallen townland, Kilronan parish, Barony of Boyle, Co Roscommon, [PO has always been Drumshambo, Co Leitrim]. When the country is noted below it means that all or at least some of the family emigrated. The year and country directly under an individual stands for when and where they were born. No last name under the individual's first name means their last name or maiden name is McTiernan.
Below are the McTiernans from Sheskin.

There was a James McTiernan, 1871--, living on Sheskin in 1911 in his own house separate from my McTiernan family house. The connection to our family is as yet unknown.
* Acording to Jim Murphy, a James McTiernan, ?1777-, also known as "Seamie Halfpenny" may be from the townland of Sheskin. The exact position of this line is a guess at this point in time with the ovious conflict yet to be resolved of the DNA test results based against the fact that Jim Murphy believes they are also from Sheskin and therefore might may be related. Joe McTiernan and Jim Murphy's line is below:

There are 10 generations of my Sheskin McTiernan family descendents. Frank Watson Sr. (ob 1999) and myself are 2nd cousins to John Flynn, Maureen Bower, Thomas Flynn, Maureen Watson and Theresa Lane as they are to us. There are eight second cousins, with a twentynine year range between the oldest, Marie Blake, nee Watson (ob 1996) and the youngest, Theresa Lane, nee Flynn. Joy Watson, Craig Bower, Darren Lane and the rest of that generation are my 2nd cousins one generation removed.
My son, Jeremy McTiernan is a 3rd cousin to Joy Watson, Darren Lane, Simon Flynn, Craig Bower and Russell Flynn. There are twentyone 3rd cousins, with a twentyseven year range between the oldest, Frank Watson Jr. and the youngest, Meghan McTiernan. So far in time there are about eleven 4th cousins.
Mary and Mick McTernan are not mentioned in Rev. Stephen's will as the other four children are, so they may not be children of Owen. In his will he mentiond his nephew John McTernan, 1862--, and noted that John was in America around 1905.
