The Boston Hugh McGrail's family

See the McGrail family history for the ancestors of 6. Bartley McGreal Sr., 1817--7-9-1876.

6. Bartley McGrail Sr., 1817--7-9-1876, was most likely, born in the townland of lisfuiltaghanor or Tullycorka, Barony of Drumahaire in the parish of Inishmagrath, County Leitrim, Ireland. The word Leitrim means "gray ridge" in Gaelic. Bartley McGrail Sr. is our direct ancestor. The sixth child of Mrs. McGrail. Bartley Sr.'s exact date of birth is unknown. The name of Bartley Sr.'s wife was Mary Flynn, <1819--. Mary Flynn's exact date of birth is unknown. Most likely, Mary Flynn was born in the townland of Tullycorka, parish of Inishmagrath. Mary McGrail, nee Flynn, <1819--, had at least two brothers and one sister. They were,

  1. Laurence Flynn, <1839--,

  2. Rose Flynn, <1839--,

  3. John Flynn, <1839--,

The 1833 Tithe list for Inishmagrath parish list a Lawerence Flynn as a tenant of land in the townland of Liscuillew, Inishmagrath civil parish, Barony of Drumahaire, PLU of Manorhamilton. This Lawerence Flynn may well be the father of Mary, Laurence, Rose and John Flynn.

The 1834 Tithe list of the parish of Inishmagrath states that a Mrs. McGrail, Michael McGrail, Hugh McGrail, and John McGrail were renters of 15 acres of land. The 1856 Griffith's Valuation of Inishmagrath list John McGrail as renting the land from Humphrey Butler. Mrs. McGrail having died in 1836, Michael in 1835, and Hugh McGrail having died between 1834 and 1856.

In the same 1856 Tithe list of the parish of Inishmagrath the names of Flynn and McTiernan are listed several times as neighbors to the McGrail's in the townland of Tullycorka.

6. Bartley McGrail Sr., 1817--7-9-1876, and his wife Mary Flynn, <1819-->1834, were married sometime before 1834, most likely in the parish of Inishmagrath. Mary Flynn died some time after 1834. Bartley Jr.'s marriage license in 1869 states that his dad was dead at the time of the weddiing. It is not certain if this is true or not. They had several children, they were,

6.1. Owen McGrail, married Bridget McNiff. They had at least one child, 6.1.1. Michael D. McGrail and possibly two additional children.

The family was also related to the Flynn's through marrage, and Hugh McGrail, 1903--, often told us stories of a Pat McPartland, who he and his brothers often worked with in the Boston area when they first came to this country. I think they could have been cousins also.
